Surgical Recovery in Dallas

Our approach

The doctors and staff at ThriveMD take a ‘whole body’ approach to healthcare to optimize your overall well-being. Depending upon your individual lab results and goals, we design a custom vitamin and hormonal regimen to stimulate and support vital aspects of your surgical recovery in Dallas.

Successful surgery requires teamwork

Successful surgeries neither begin with incisions nor ends with sutures.

Instead, optimal outcomes result from continual teamwork among physicians, medical support teams, and patients. It starts with pre-surgical preparation and extends through a thorough, detailed, and disciplined post-surgical recovery plan. Surgical recovery is not a passive undertaking. It requires active and ongoing commitment on the part of all involved. Dallas surgical recovery patients must do their part by taking active ownership of and responsibility for their surgical results.

Be your own ‘quarterback’

Take control of your recovery. That starts with developing and executing an effective and detailed “game plan.” Doctors and patients must work together to speed post-surgical healing, reduce pain, optimize results and return patients to their normal activities as quickly as possible.

Don’t ‘cherry-pick’

Follow your doctor’s post-surgical instructions to a ‘T’ Patients often follow the directions they like and disregard the ones they don’t. If you don’t understand why a particular instruction has been given, ask your healthcare provider. Knowledge is power, and it’s vital that you ‘buy in’ to your recovery plan.

Follow up

Keep your follow-up appointments.

Don’t view them as a waste of time or an unnecessary expense. Your surgeon needs to monitor your recovery to ensure the procedure has successfully treated your condition and that your incisions are healing properly and without infection. Your provider may also make adjustments to your medication in the weeks following your surgery.

Trust your eyes

Look at your incision several times a day. (That may, in some cases, require a mirror.) Is your incision pink or red? Are your staples or stitches holding properly? But, again, it’s your body, and it’s important to provide an extra set of “eyes” for your doctor.

Give your body the ‘fuel’ it needs

You may not feel like eating after having surgery. But it is vitally important that you eat nutritious food and adequately hydrate your body. High-quality nutrition will help you avoid complications and shake off the side effects of surgical anesthesia.

Cough or sneeze with caution

It’s essential to cough after surgery because coughs help you clear your lungs and avoid pneumonia. But coughs and sneezes can strain or even re-open your incision. So brace your incision with a hand or pillow when you cough or sneeze.

Clean your incision thoroughly but gently

In most cases, gentle cleansing with soap and water is all it takes. Avoid scrubbing your incision. Scabbing is good! It’s how wounds heal. Take it easy. Your doctor may recommend that you avoid baths and opt for showers instead.

Be honest with yourself

Don’t just “tough it out.” If you are bleeding, having trouble breathing, struggling to keep food and water down, or see apparent signs of infection, contact your healthcare provider immediately and, if necessary, head to the emergency room.

Control your pain

Take your prescribed medication exactly as directed. Effective pain management promotes healthy sleep, which in turn aids and speeds healing.

Move it!

Walking after surgery is essential. A short stroll every hour or so can help prevent serious complications such as pneumonia or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Walking also increases your circulation and helps with proper blood flow.

Lean on your team

People want to help you. Let them. Your surgical team, your family, and your friends can and should be dependable sources of support. You need not feel alone. It is especially critical to have a friend or family member with you the first 24 to 48 hours after your surgery to assist you. During those first 48 hours, you may need help getting up, lying down, lifting objects, and driving.
